my extended bio

My name is Caitlin Cruz. I was born in Arizona, raised in Nebraska and found my true home in Texas.

I'm an independent journalist who specializes in reported features and analysis about reproductive rights, women, politics, and power. I also do fact-checking and copy-editing for print and digital publications.

In my years as a freelance journalist, I’ve worked with numerous companies on longterm contracts, including as a founding member of Snapchat’s Happening Now team, a breaking news product; as an interim editor at The Texas Observer; as a writer for Bustle Digital Group; and an editor for Gizmodo Media Group. Previously, I was an editor and reporter for Fusion, a blogger for Talking Points Memo, and an investigative fellow at The Seattle Times.

I’m an enthusiastic dues-paying member of the National Writer’s Union’s Freelance Solidarity Project (ask me about it or how to get into freelancing!) and a member of the Author’s Guild. My other professional affiliations include Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE), NLGJA/The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, Study Hall, and National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ).

My writing has appeared in/on The New Republic, D Magazine, The Texas Observer, Pacific Standard, Elle.com, TexasMonthly.com, Jezebel, Digg, Racked (RIP), REMEZCLA, The New Orleans Times-Picayune, and The Arizona Republic, among others.

I graduated from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University with concurrent bachelor's and master's degrees in 2014.

Now, I live in Houston. And I would love to work with you.
